Who says thirteen is not a lucky number? With various forced hiatuses it has taken us almost thirteen years to have ten SEMFs, but we have made this anniversary program truly one to remember! We have invited back many of our favourite artists from previous festivals, and will also present two hot-ticket violinists, new to SEMF, but guaranteed to bring fireworks and fun to this celebration. Sergey Malov is one of classical music’s true mavericks: having won top prizes in major international competitions on both violin and viola (yes indeed), he adds to his busy concert schedule as soloist and chamber musician with performances on an extraordinary instrument: the violoncello da spalla, the instrument Bach is thought to have owned and used to compose several works, including the cello suites. Sergey will bring this with him to SEMF for an amazing Australian premiere!
We are also thrilled to welcome Kate Suthers, the newly appointed concertmaster of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, returning to Australia after a distinguished career in Britain and giving her first festival appearance here since her return. Yu Kosuge, Andrea Lam, Chris Moore, and Andrew Goodwin are returning favourites, of course along with SEMF family Tobi and Sara. Quite a lineup we think you’ll agree……
The program is as always one of discovery, and of rediscovery, but always of enjoyment. Boellmann and Borodin join Amy Beach and Paul Schoenfeld, who all sit comfortably alongside Brahms, Haydn, Schumann and many others, to bring you a truly celebratory degustation. Also, one of our artists reveals a second talent…..
So settling back and with a glass of magnificent Sanguine wine, let’s enjoy the beautiful ambience and the warm Hunter family hospitality, and drink to our ten SEMFs thus far, and the future!
